Arbanassi was founded in the late 15th century by Christians migrating from the south-western
parts of the Balkan Peninsula. By the mid 16th century it belonged to the Grand Vizir to the
Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
The merchants of Arbanassi became very wealthy through international trade in gold, copper and silk.
